Deleting your account
Your Linger account lives on one server, run by the friend who invited you: its host. Linger the project runs no servers and holds nobody's data, so your account is deleted there, by the server itself.
In the app
- Open Settings, then Account & App.
- Under Delete Your Account, press Delete my account on your server's name.
- Choose whether to also delete everything you wrote, type your password, and press Delete my account.
It happens at once, on that server. If you're on several servers, each has its own account: delete each one from its own Settings. The steps are the same in the app for computers and the app for phones.
Without the app
Ask your server's host, the person who invited you or runs the server. In the app they remove your account and then delete it, and can delete what you wrote too if you ask. If you no longer know who that is, the address of the server you signed in to is theirs.
What's deleted
- Your display name, status, name style, entrance sound and local time.
- Your password and every sign-in, on every device.
- Where you'd read up to, your notification settings, the people you blocked, and any export you made.
- If you choose: every message you wrote and the files on them, your reactions, and your votes in polls still open. If you don't, they stay in the conversations they're part of, without your name: they show as "Deleted account".
What's kept
- Your username, so nobody new can take it and pass as you. Nothing else is attached to it.
- Reports you made to the host, or that were made about you. They stay with the host.
- Votes in polls that had already closed, without your name, so the poll keeps how it came out.
- Copies in the server's own nightly backups of its database, until they're replaced: the server keeps a week of nightly copies and a month of weekly ones, then deletes them itself. A host who keeps extra copies elsewhere decides how long those last.
Nothing is kept anywhere else. The app has no analytics, telemetry or crash reporting, and Linger the project never receives anything about you.
